These are drive modes you use on specific road situations. But what does L, 2, and D3 mean and when do you use them? Your guess is right — L stands for low. When in this mode, the engine will stay in its lowest possible gear ratio, which is basically the 1st gear. You can use this gear in downhill or uphill climbs that need steady and low speed — like driving on a heavy, moving traffic on a quite steep hill. Just like the L mode, the 2 mode means that the engine will only use the first 2 gears of your car.

It will maximize the RPM of each gear to get the needed pull from the engine. However, in other models, it will start and lock in 2nd gear and will just move up when a certain range of RPM is reached to mitigate engine damage. You can also switch to this mode when going downhill to engage engine braking — taking out the stress from your brakes. But keep in mind that your safety should be your number one priority.

As the name suggests, the D3 or sometimes just 3 mode will only utilize the first 3 gear ratios of your car, or in some, locks it on the 3rd gear only. Just like the 2 and L, it will shift at a higher gear if the maximum RPM has been reached. It will also maximize the RPM range per gear for the needed power and pull. Since this limits the car up to the third gear only, the speed will also be limited for cruising.

This is useful especially when towing a trailer or another car since you have to control your speed. You can also use this during heavy rainfall where slowing down is highly recommended.

You can use this to downshift or upshift manually in certain situations without getting out of the automatic transmission capability. These are the most common modes you could see in cars today. With proper use of these driving modes, you will be able to maximize the use of your car even when it has an automatic transmission. Where to use? What would cause that? Steve, That is a common thing, not related to the type of motor. The gear is probably falling off the microswitch, due to a too-tight crankdown cable or an internal hydraulic leak in the power pack. What is happening, the microswitch is calling for the motor to run, which it does, it runs for an instant and shuts off nomally.

He may not have cranked it back competely afterward. I would suggest he have a knowlegable Swift mechanic run the gear on jacks and check all the adjustments. If it cranks down ok, he may want to back off slightly on the tension of the pull down cable. If the power pack is leaking internally, Joe Ranson is the only person I know who is good at lapping the brass plates in there.

Jim, It does not do it the gear motor light blip occasionally until I put the flaps down — then it starts. Steve, Oh, well thats different. I thought it happened in cruise flight. If it happens AFTER you put the flaps down, the selector in the power pack is leaking slightly internally, allowing the flaps to retract enough to activate the micro switch.

I think I would just live with that.

Fred Lipscomb B. Fred: Is that the little red button? Possibly it at 50 years of age is tired and needs replacement. Has any work been done on the system recently? The brushes in the hyd. Jim: You are right, B does have a 20 hp Mercury Outboard starter motor for a hyd.

Is there an easy way to check the brushes in the hyd. Thanks: T. Fred, It could be several things, but I would first suspect the motor. The brushes are easy to check. If memory serves, the top of the motor comes off and you can eyeball the brushes.

You say the red gear switch. That still leaves me a little confused. There is a red button on the rt. That is a hyd. Monty: Took the Hyd. Motor off today, and you were right. Cleaned armature, brushes, etc. Put it back together, reinstalled it, and flaps work great. Motor Pump Monty! I am back. Last time we talked, was about my Hyd. Checked Hyd.

I plan on replacing the bolts, also. Can I go to stainless or should I stick with Cad plated? Bob, There is a bolt and bushing kit available from Swift Parts.

Its not real cheap, but much better than making your own bushings, and scrounging up the right bolts. Every Swift owner should have one of these on hand, and replace the bushings and bolts as required.

The gear should not be too tight. Many times inexperienced mechanics have replaced every bolt and bushing in the gear, and then found it was just the same as before.

Before changing a bolt, remove it and check it with a micrometer. If its obviously worn, or measures less than. Sometimes, just snugging it up or adding a washer will produce results. I have some stainless NAS bolts that are just the right size for several locations in the Swift gear, so I use them when necessary. I also keep a bolt and bushing kit around, if the bushings are changed, sometimes it is necessary to try several bolts to get one that fits just right.

A local machine shop will have to do this, there are are not bushings for that location in the kit. Ditto for the steel lugs in the outer cylinder.

Does the top link go on the forward side where the botton link joins it?? The steel ones are slightly curved on one side, which way do they fit the gear?

I have the adel gear with steel type scissors. Its the predrilled and tapped one. I dont have that one installed. Do you know where I can get two of them?? Thanks — Eddie NB. Eddie, Why? The steel scissors is much heavier. Sure its just a few ounces, but you know, a few ounces here, a few ounces there…….

If you insist, I believe Joe has those stops at Swift Parts. I have to figure out the assembly procedure every time, its not something I can remember!

I believe the left and right are different. The steel scissors usually needs a little grinding to permit full travel, otherwise the links bind up before the strut bottoms. So, I am smart enough to ask for help before I totally disassemble the plane. I have the smaller tires 15XX6. I talked to Bill Shepherd he has the small tires also and he said to keep 50 psi. Anyway how do I check the toe in or out. I was thinking to just match the left side.

Sam: Those tires need 50 psi. The smaller volume, plus the higher pressure makes for a very hard tire. Our messaging, standards and services connect you to your counterparties worldwide, so you can transact securely and reliably.
